The 20th edition of CAN Info-Tech 2014, an expo on information technology, entertainment show and conference, kicked off at Bhrikuti Mandap in the capital on Thursday.
Speaking at the inaugural ceremony, Vice-president Paramanda Jha said information technology (IT) has become a necessity for the country and its people rather than a choice of comfort.
He also underlined the importance of operating the IT Park in Banepa as well as prioritizing e-governance and start trading through the internet by bringing IT into the day-to-day use by both the public and the government.
The six-day long expo organized by the Computer Association of Nepal (CAN) features 221 stalls.
The organizers have estimated that 500,000 will visit the event. The event has stalls of hardware sales and maintenance companies, power solution providers, dealers of mobile phones and accessories, hardware dealers and distributors, Internet service providers, telecommunication companies, ICT colleges and training institutes, and providers of software and payment solutions, among others.
The entry fee has been fixed at Rs 100 for general visitors, while students will get a 50 percent discount.
